Our volunteers wrote a lovely tutorial on hot composting for me to post here, but anything hot doesn’t seem appropriate after yesterday afternoon! We had our first forest fire of the year, the closest to Casalinho we’ve experienced.
One of our visitors raised the alarm, and whilst another phoned the emergency services I drove down to check out the situation. Several separate fires, both in the forest and around a neighbour’s house, fire right up to the road verge, a couple of passers by but no bombeiros yet. Race home, adrenaline pumping, to spend the rest of the afternoon in a state of high alert waiting for something to happen but praying it wouldn’t.
30 hours later there’s nothing but smoke. It was all but out but last night, and the bombeiros who’ve been attending today have been really just watching out for further break outs.
At it’s closest, the fire was around 200m from the topmost point of Casalinho. We have a lot to be thankful for.
